The efficiency of an engine is determined from its compression ratio. Compression ratio is the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber to its minimum volume. The more the compression ratio, the more is the efficiency. Since diesel engine operates at higher compression ratio than petrol engine, it has higher efficiency.
