Hi,

Here is your answer

The oxides of nitrogen are

  • N₂O
  • NO
  • N₂O₃
  • NO₂
  • N₂O₄
  • N₂O₅

The reason is that nitrogen has unique ability to form pπ-pπ bonds with elements having small size and high electronegativity like oxygen. Due to the absence of d orbitals it cannot form dπ-pπ bonds with the heavier elements.

Notes:

1. The oxide in the higher oxidation state is more acidic than that of lower oxidation state.

2.Nitrogen differs from other elements of the group due to its small size, high ionisation ethalpy and non-availability of d orbitals.

Hope this helps you.
