Hi,
Your answer :
The grave (or the tomb) is the place where the mummy is buried. Every Egyptian gives great importance to his burial place and he takes great care to prepare it during his lifetime; whereas there is a second life after death, the grave is organized as a place of eternal life.
The tomb has two main functions:
- keep the mummified body and the deceased's property (the funeral furniture)
- to return the funerary cult to the deceased
These two functions are performed in two distinct parts of the tomb:
- the body of the deceased and his property are kept in a burial chamber (not accessible to the living after burial)
- the cult is exercised in a chapel (also called funerary temple for certain tombs) where the living can deposit the offerings that allow the survival of the deceased.
Depending on the times and the social status of the deceased, the tomb took on a different appearance. There are three types of tombs:
- In the Old Kingdom:
. the mastabas: they shelter the body of the dignitaries of the regime
. the pyramids: they are intended for the king
- In the Middle Kingdom and especially in the New Kingdom:
. the hypogea: they concern an ever larger part of the population
Good bye :)
