It may be like this ,
y² +( 1/2 )y - 1 = 0
=> y² + 2 × y × 1/4 = 1
=> y² + 2 × y × 1/4 + ( 1/4 )² = 1 + ( 1/4 )²
=> ( y + 1/4 )² = 1 + 1/16
=> ( y + 1/4 )² = ( 17/16 )
Therefore ,
y + 1/4 = ± √( 17/16 )
y = - 1/4 ± √17/4
y = ( -1 ± √17 )/4
