Yakima river was treacherous.what did the authors mother do to keep him away from it?

The author’s mother warned him on several occasions about the dangers of Yakima river. She reminded him that the water was treacherous and there had been several cases of drowning deaths in the river. As a child, this bred in him a constant fear for water.

He however overcame this fear later and learnt swimming.
