yamuna pollutants and solutions
Answers
Answer:
Yamuna, the main source of water for Delhi, is one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Nineteen drains in the capital flow into the river contributing 96 per cent on the total pollutants in Yamuna. Just five per cent of the sewage that is discharged into the river is treated, posing a serious health hazard.
Basic steps like ensuring setting up of effluent treatment plants which ensure that no untreated sewage and industrial pollutants is released in the river; increasing the water flow of the river; protection of flood plains; will go a long way in ensuring that the Yamuna survives
Pollution levels in the Yamuna River have risen. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) load has increased by 2.5 times between 1980 and 2005: From 117 tonnes per day (TDP) in 1980 to 276 TDP in 2005. The Yamuna has been reduced to a small stream, draining industrial effluents, sewage, dirt and other toxic substances.
