3x - y = 40  ---- (1)

4x - 2y = 50

Multiply (1) by 2

6x - 2y = 80

4x - 2y = 50

Subtract these equations.

2x = 30

x = 15

Substitute in (1)

(3x15) - y = 40

45 - y = 40

- y = -5

y = 5

correct answers  = x = 15

wrong answers = y = 5

Total questions = 15 + 5

=20
