This extract is from the story, 'The Rattrap' by Selma Lagerlof. This is a story about a poor peddler, who does odd jobs and petty thefts to make both ends meet. He was never welcomed by the people in their homes. Once, he was welcomed by an old crofter who fed him well and also played cards with him. The peddler desperately needed money and decided to steal from the crofter. After stealing he went into a jungle and ended up at an iron mill where he was allowed to stay the night.
When the ironmaster visited the mill, he mistook the peddler to be an old acquaintance. He invited the peddler home and even sent his daughter Edla to convince him to come home for Christmas. The peddler agreed and as soon as he cleaned and washed, the ironmaster knew he had made a mistake. Edla insisted that he should stay for Christmas. The morning after Christmas, when they went to the church, they discovered that the man was a thief and had stolen from the crofter. The ironmaster rebuked his daughter for letting the man stay for Christmas and wondered if the man had stolen from them as well.
