Yogesh takes a magnetic compass in the lab and tries to show how it works to his friends. But,

it does not work well in the laboratory. It just swings to and forth. He then takes it out in the

field and it started working. What do you think could be the possible reasons for this?

Answer:

☑️The needle of a compass is itself a magnet, and thus the north pole of the magnet always points north, except when it is near a strong magnet.

☑️When you take the compass away from the bar magnet, it again points north.

☑️So, we can conclude that the north end of a compass is attracted to the south end of a magnet.

☑️A compass points north because all magnets have two poles , a north pole and a south pole, and the north pole of one magnet is attracted to the south pole of another magnet.

☑️You may have seen this demonstrated by a pair of simple bar magnets or refrigerator magnets pushed end to end.)

Reasons the magnet stopped working:

  • The needle in the magnetic compass is a small magnet. It points the north and south pole with the help of earth magnet.
  • When the magnetic compass is near or in the strong magnetic field, it starts to swing.
  • When it is taken out of that field, then the magnetic needle works as usual.
  • For example, when a magnetic compass is placed near the refrigerator, the compass does not point correctly.
