5th March, 2016 was the 25th Wedding Anniversary of my parents. So me and my younger sister planned a surprise for them.
Since I am a creative person and prefer personalised stuff, I made the below signboards and fixed them together with two photographs (taken from their original wedding album) of their marriage on the entrance door.
I made the party props.
To showcase their journey of 25 years, we collected around 100 pictures (a combination of original hard copies and print outs from soft copies) and made memory hangers (okay atleast I call them that!). This is a special and a distinct part of my house (with grass) so we decided to decorate this place with balloons and the memory hangers. Also we decorated the table with rose petals and wax candles.
And to do all this we had to make sure they are not in the house when we decorate it. So we told one of dad's close friends to invite both mom and dad for dinner on 4th March. Everything sorted. They, though unwillingly (because we made them wear heavy Indian wear so they kind of got suspicious that there is something fishy and we are upto something), went for dinner and all of us got busy with the preparations.
We requested each of our family member to send a video message wishing them on their special day. And we succeeded in collecting and compiling the beautiful messages of around 92 people in a 25 minutes video. Calling and giving reminders, collecting and compiling all got over in a span of just 2 days. This is a picture of the first view of the video i.e. how the video began.
We thought of giving a real wedding touch and so arranged for the varmalas (i.e. the garlands that are traditionally exchanged in Indian weddings). We booked a bouquet for their 25th anniversary and called a professional guitar player to play romantic songs while they exchange garlands (thus replacing the original mantras read by pundits in pheras [taking the seven vows of marriage])
We ordered a special (and utterly delicious) chocolate cake with a message (on the bottom right) which read '25 years of love and togetherness and still counting')
We customised two frames with pictures of their wedding.
We invited around 50 people (friends, families and neighbours) for the midnight cake cutting and they were all present (really thankful to them☺. It wouldn't have been possible without them.)
So the preparations done !!
And now time for party !!!
Everyone got into the house, switched off the lights and waited patiently for them to return from dinner and the doorbell to ring. And ting-tong !!! We opened the door and everybody welcomed them with hugs, smiles and wishes. Everybody was clicking pictures and there were so many flashes that I am sure they musn't have felt any less than celebrities !
And behind them came the guitar players and the bouquet. I think my parents did not miss smiling even for a second. We all were cheering and singing. The atmosphere was just so beautiful.
Then we made them exchange garlands and cut the cake. Post that we made them dance and then watched the video messages. I saw them in tears of happiness. Those 25 minutes were full of love and emotions. An overwhelming time !
Then began the photography session (like the one we see in wedding receptions). A friend who is good at photography was the photographer for the day (err.. night☺). Everybody had snacks and the celebration continued till 4 in the morning.
The best part for me was when my dad hugged me and my mom kissed me. That was the biggest proof that we succeeded in making the event a good memory for a lifetime.
