Dear diary
I grew up in a military family. There were several years when my father was not there on my parent’s anniversary, my mother’s birthday, or our birthdays.
The first anniversary my dad missed that I remember was when I was 12. Please keep in mind, this was long before amazon or the ability to order things online. He called me on the phone the day before and asked if I could pick mom up some flowers. He had hidden money under his side of the bed so I could.
On the way home from school, I stopped by the flower shop and bought my mother a bouquet of 12 lilies (her wedding flower). Then I got some of her favorite chocolate. I rushed home and set up the bouquet and chocolate on the table with a card dad had left. Then my younger brother and I quickly cleaned the house and made dinner.
Mom came home, saw what we had done with dad’s help and cried. She didn't know dad was on speaker phone, and he joined us for dinner remotely.
We repeated a version of that 4 or 5 times. The running joke in the family now is I call dad and remind him to get flowers for their anniversary. Its fun every year.
Sometimes just taking a bit of the burden off and spending time is the very best thing you can do.
