The Malabar Hill police felicitated a 14-year-old boy on Sunday for saving a minor girl from drowning in Banganga Tank at Walkeshwar.

“The 9-year-old girl, identified as Krishna Pashte, is a resident of Diva and had come to Walkeshwar to stay with her uncle who is to get married,” said sub-inspector Sandeep Patil of the Malabar Hill police station.

According to the police, Pashte had ventured into the shallow end of Banganga Tank for a swim, but soon started drowning. She held onto a girl who was swimming nearby following which the girl raised an alarm.

“Mohit Dalvi, who was also swimming in the tank at that time, spotted Pashte drowning and swam to rescue her,” said senior inspector Rajendra Kale of the Malabar Hill police station.

By the time Dalvi reached the girl, she had drifted to the deeper side of the tank. “The girl was trapped in a layer of slush on the tank’s bed. But the boy did not think twice. He dived in and pulled her out,” said Kale.

Pashte was taken to St Elizabeth’s Hospital, Malabar Hill, where she was admitted in the intensive care unit. She had ingested a lot of water, but is doing well now, the police said, adding that the hospital will bear the expenses of her treatment.

The police decided to commend the efforts of Dalvi, an orphan, for saving the girl’s life.

“We learnt about the efforts of the boy and felicitated him. We gave him a box of chocolates and a bouquet. We will recommend his name for awards,” said Kale.

“Dalvi wants to be an expert swimmer when he grows older,” said Patil.
