Dear Editor:
I have heard lots of people talk about the horrible treatment meted out to patients at the Victoria Hospital but I never believed the stories, until I experienced it for myself. I went to the hospital on Saturday night with a tummy ache, vomiting and diarrhea. By the time I got to there, I had already vomited and gone to the washroom about 20 times. After I was attended to, I was left on a chair to suffer for hours. I was in pain in my ‘Lady Lee’. I felt weak and lifeless, so I decided to ask for a bed after noticing one was empty.
I could not stand sitting anymore and my request for a bed kept falling on deaf ears, so I asked to be dismissed so that I can return home. I asked them to remove the empty drips from my arm, but they wouldn’t. One of the nurses kept shouting “Why everybody is Victoria, Victoria they coming.” When I finally decided to leave, only then, did I get the attention of all the doctors and nurses, which led to them eventually giving me a bed. Few moments later when a cleaner came in and saw the condition I was in, she offered me a bed sheet and a cover.
My experience at Victoria Hospital was horrible to say the least. This is a mental scar that I will bear for a lifetime. I pray that I won’t have to visit Victoria again. I would like to hear the views of St. Lucians as to what they think about my experience and if they can share theirs too.
Thanking you Sir
