Single touch method: Rub the needle with a magnet ony in one direction from one end of the needle to the other. Repeat this procedure for at least 30 times with one pole of the bar magnet. Now the knitting needle would have become a magnet. If you take some iron filings near the ends of the needle they will be attracted.
