When ethanol is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid at 443K, dehydration takes place and ethene is formed. In this reaction concentrated sulphuric acid acts as a dehydrating agent.

CH3CH2OH   →  Ethene + water

when sodium metal is added to ethanol, a gas is evolved.

2C2H5OH + 2 Na → 2C2H5ONa + H2

The gas which is evolved in this chemical reaction is the hydrogen gas. Along with the hydrogen gas, sodium ethoxide is also generated.
