you are given hammer, battery, bulb, wires and a switch.
(a) How could you use them to distinguish blw samples of
metals & non metals. (b) Assess the usefulness of these tests
in distinguishing blw metals& non metals.

Answer:

from the given samples we can distinguish between metals and nonmetals by the following experiment.

bring a bar magnet near each of the samples and the sample which is attracted by the bar magnet is a metal and which is not reflected by the bar magnet is non metal.

like in the first sample the hammer the hammer is actually a mixture of a metal and nonmetal as the top part of the Amazon method as it is affected by the bar magnet and the wooden partition on metal as it is not attracted by the bar magnet.

the battery is totally a non metal as it is not attracted by the bar magnet.

bulb is also a mixture of a metal and nonmetal the glass in the beginner nonmetal and the rest metal part is the metal. wires are also mixture of a metal and nonmetal the outer covering of the wires are the non metal and the inner wire is a metal.

switch again is a mixture of a metal and nonmetal as the outer club is a non metal is made up of plastic and inside the switch Dera some parts like screw board which are made up of metals and refracted by the permanent plastic is not attracted by the bar magnet.

hope it helps you

Answer:

(a) If the substance can be hammered to convert into sheets then it is metal if it is broken into pieces then it is non-metal.

(b) Set up the circuit arrangement using bulb, battery, wire and switch. Place the object between the ends of circuit. If the bulb starts glowing then the substance is a metal otherwise it is non-metal because metals are good conductor of electricity. generally above methods can be used to identify metals and non-metals. But there are some exceptions also for example sodium is metal which is not malleable in fact it is brittle. Graphite, allotrope of non-metal carbon, is a good conductor of electricity.
