When I was two, my family got into a car accident. My parents and older sister all died on impact, but me, the clueless, screaming baby, miraculously survived. Since then, I was left in the care of my maternal grandparents.
They fed me, changed me, showered me, and taught me many lessons that served me well until today. The most impactful and memorable lesson they taught me, or more specifically my grandmother taught me, is to be kind, and to give without asking for anything in return.
I remember being seven and seeing her go to the shops alone every afternoon. Convinced she was going to buy treats behind my back, I decided to follow her one day. Halfway, I slipped on a twig and she caught me following her. Without scolding me, she pulled me up and brought me to where she usually goes - a neighbourhood Chinese restaurant.
There, she ordered some simple dishes for takeaway. I was extremely confused, considering we just had lunch an hour ago. After paying for the food, she brought me back to our apartment block and we got into the elevator. Instead of pressing the button for level 7, where we lived, she pressed the number for level 10.
She led me to apartment 1024. There was only one pair of old sandals in front of the door and I heard coughing coming from inside. My grandmother gestured at me to be quiet, then hung the bag of food at the door. Then, we headed back to our apartment.
At home, my grandmother told me that that was Mrs. Ling's apartment, who was a elderly lady who was sick and lived alone, and that she'd been buying her food for the past three months. She told me that it was alright if Mrs. Ling couldn't repay her, and that she did it out of kindness.
From that moment on, I decided to live by my grandmother's example, to be selfless, caring, and kind as she is.
