The Permanent Settlement system had some drawbacks so it would not be wise to extend it to the Madras Presidency. They were:

1. It adversely affected the income of the company. Due to lack of proper measurement of land the revenue was fixed at a lower level.

2. The system was beneficial only for the landlords. There was no improvement in the condition of the farmers. They continued to be exploited by the landlords.

3. There was no improvement in the agricultural produce. The landlords led luxurious lives. They did not make any efforts to improve agriculture.
