On this auspicious occasion of India's 65th Independence Day, I take the pleasure to wish every citizen of India, a very happy independence day. On 15th August 1947, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag in the Red fort and marked the independence of our great nation. In his memorable speech, 'Tryst with destiny' Punditji pledged our dedication towards our country and still larger for the cause of humanity.
India has a rich and glorious history. India has been called a golden bird and all the nations in the world looked upon India as the destination for education, commerce and culture. India was the supplier of various minerals and spices, traders from all over the world traded these rare ingredients and made huge profits. India is the place of birth of major religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism which were later accepted and embraced by various other nations. India showed the path of truth and non violence to the world.
The contribution of India in the field of science is quite well known. In Albert Einstein's words,"We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made!"
Institutes like Takshashila and Nalanda were the hub of education and people from all over the world came here to study and enrich their knowledge. India gave the world the concept of zero; Aryabhatta gave the approximate value of pi up to five decimal places accurate. He also gave an almost correct approximation for the length of the year and the diameter of the earth. Thus India has leaded the world in the field of science and technology.
The country spans over 3,287,263 square kilometres from Jammu & Kashmir at the top to Kanyakumari at the south and Gujarat at the west to Manipur at the east. Together all this constitutes the great nation of India that every Indian is proud of. India is a nation of many culture, religion, language, ethnicity and this diversity make it a unique nation. The people of India live together harmoniously giving an example to the world and spreading the message of brotherhood and togetherness despite of differences in ideology and appearance.
Mark twain on his travels to India said,"This is indeed India! The land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendour and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of traditions, whose yesterday's bear date with the modering antiquities for the rest of nations-the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien prince and alien peasant, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the world combined."
Although freedom has come free to us, freedom was achieved through blood and sacrifice. Our freedom fighters sacrificed their presents for the future of the nation. Great freedom fighters like Gandhiji, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad showed the path to achieve independence from the stranglehold of the British Empire. The sacrifices that thousands and thousands of Indians laid for the freedom of the country is commendable and we must never forget the sacrifices that they made for us. With a vision of a free India they laid their lives happily and never yielded to the heinous regime of the British Empire.
