Subject: Views on the article ‘Ban Poly Bags’.
Dear Sir,
This is with regard to a recent article titled ‘Ban Poly Bags’ published in your magazine last week.
I would like to present a few views in regard to the recent incessant bans on polythene bags all over the city. While it is no doubt a welcome move to help the environment, it is leaving consumers bewildered about what alternatives to use.
Supermarkets are selling cloth bags at Rs. 30 per piece. These bags are hardly sturdy and consumers have to carry at least 3-4 while doing their monthly shopping. Secondly, the jute bags that no one hardly purchased are now being sold for double the price even at wholesale bag shops.
Most of the restaurant delivery parcels are delivered in bags that look like they are made from cloth but actually have non-recyclable material in them.
Banning plastic but not monitoring the prices of cloth bags is bad both for the government and the environment. Cheap plastic bags are still used by local vegetable vendors, and the common middle-class consumer is not going to spend from their already limited income on reusable bags.
Through your magazine, I just want to make the authorities aware that half-baked changes only cause further disruption. It would be great if consumers are providing with a fixed place and price for sustainable products so that bad businesses stop looting us.
Thank u
