Given :  a square quilt with the design shown

Side = 6 feet

To Find : the side length x of the inner square that would make its area equal to 50% of the total area of the quilt.

Round to the nearest tenth of a foot.

a. 4.1 ft

b. 4.3 ft

c. 4.4 ft

d. 4.2 ft

Solution:

Area of square = ( side)²

Area of Quilt = 6²  = 36 sq feet

50% of the total area of the quilt. = (50/100) 36 = 18 sq feet

Area of design = 18 sq feet

Area of design = x² sq feet

x²  = 18

=> x = 3√2

=> x  = 3 ( 1.414)

=> x = 4.242 feet

4.2 ft   Round to the nearest tenth of a foot.
