You are provided with a hollow ball A of volume 15cm^3 and mass 12 grams .Both are placed on the surface of water contained in a large tub .find upthrust on each ball and which ball will sink ?

A block of wood floats in water with 2/3 of its volume submerged it means 1/3rd of it's volume is above the water.

Let v be the volume of the object. And be its density. So, weight of the object, w = vg

Volume of water displaced = v -1/3 v = 2/3 v

Density of water = 1 g/cc

Weight of water displaced = (2/3 v) × 1 × g

By the law of floatation,

Weight of the object = weight of water displaced

= > vg = 2/3 vg

= > = 2/3 g/cc

Thus, the relative density of the object is = (2/3)/1 = 2/3
