Answer:

Petrol (gasoline) and other petroleum products have a lower specific gravity than water so they will naturally separate with the fuel floating on top of a layer of water. You can pour the petrol off of the settled water or drain the water from the bottom if the container. In the old days people would pour petrol through a chamois which would let the fuel pass while the water was strained out. There are filters specifically made to separate water from petrol and Diesel fuel. These often have a drain valve at the bottom of the filter cannister to allow the accumulated water to be drained. There are old-style fuel ‘strainers’ having a glass bowl where any settled water may be easily seen and drained.
