Answer:

We were at the venue. Salini had worked really hard  for the George Bernard Show elocution competition.  The school had selected her after many rounds of audition. Topics were given an hour before the event:  ‘Children and politics’. I was worry-free and confident  as such topics were Salini’s forte. We wrote down the  points. Salini rehearsed well.

Her name was announced on the tenth number.  Hardly had she started introducing the topic, when  her eyes became foggy and her speech garbled. Before  I went on the stage, Salini collapsed. The auditorium  fell silent. Even after sprinkling water on her face,  she remained unconscious. I informed her parents and  took her to the nearest hospital.

The doctor gave a tensed look when I told  him everything. Salini was taken to the ICU. It  was extremely difficult for me to calm down her  traumatized parents. A battery of tests detected that  Salini had a small brain tumour. The only consolation  was that the tumour was not in a vulnerable stage and

that it could be operated successfully. Salini’s mother  was no more than a stone on the day of the operation

Salini was discharged after 20 days of the operation.  As she was slowly walking away with her parents, I  thought that life is so unpredictable so we shouldn’t  take it for granted.
