Dear Sir

Subject: Abolition of the practice of death penalty

I would like to draw the attention to the practice of death penalty still continuing in our country. Despite India making great progress, it is practices like these that suggest a strong colonial hangover, an outdated legal system and a barbaric attitude.

The British were known to use death penalty as a way of suppressing the people and instilling fear in the minds of the public. Their objective was mainly to continue to exploit the Indians for their own gains. However, in independent India, there is no question of rulers and slaves. Hence, execution is now carried out not for a particular reason but only as a continuation of colonial trends. Other punishments could very well serve the same purpose.

Additionally, punishment should be reformative, so that it makes an individual reconsider his actions and makes him accountable as well. However, once a convict is hanged, there is no scope for any reformation to occur. Also, it does not serve as a deterrent to crime. This suggests that the death penalty is ineffective in bringing down crime rates. It is at best, an outdated punishment.

It is rather unfortunate that such issues need to be raised because it only showcases the barbaric nature of the Indian legal system. In case of a wrong conviction, the accused who has already been executed, cannot be brought back to life. It portrays India as a barbaric nation where there is no value for life.

The legal fraternity needs to take cognizance of the fact that the death penalty is in sharp contrast to the image of India being a progressive and democratic nation. The practice thus, needs to be thought over and done away with.

Yours truly,

Rehana
