Answer:

We think that the natural state of a body is to be at rest and that it moves only if driven by a force . In other words, we think that for a body to have a non zero velocity it should have a non zero force acting on it. When we throw a ball upwards in a moving bus, the ball should not move horizontally when in air as no force is acting on it in the horizontal direction. But we are moving horizontally (as the bus in which we are sitting is moving). So, the ball should fall behind us. BUT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN.

Lets consider that the real effect of a force is always to change the speed of a body, rather than to set it moving, as was previously thought. It also means that whenever a body is not acted on by any force, it will keep on moving at the same velocity. This idea was first stated explicitly in Newton’s Principia Mathematica, and is known as Newton’s first law of motion.

Before throwing the ball it had a horizontal velocity (as it was moving with us). No force acts on the body in the horizontal direction when it is thrown up. Thus the ball should continue moving horizontally (along with its vertical motion) even after throwing. We are also moving horizontally. Thus the ball should fall in our hands.

This idea of considering the effect of force may seem counter - intuitive but real life observations can be explained using this idea (as this observation was explained). So lets just consider it to be true.
