The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2004 will be held on May 22 at Singapore Indoor Stadium, honouring the best in Indian cinema as voted by their colleagues.

Conceptualised and promoted by Wizcraft International Entertainment, the awards were launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome, London. Since then they've travelled far and wide, being held at Sun City, South Africa, in 2001 and in Genting Highlands in Malaysia in 2002. The awards moved back to South Africa — Johannesburg — in 2003 and return to the Far East again this year.

A three-day extravaganza — the Singapore IIFA Weekend 2004 — has been planned to showcase the best of Indian cinema and provide a platform for interaction with global media. Events during the weekend include the IIFA World Premiere, IIFA Foundation Event, IIFA Forum and the IIFA Awards.

"Singapore is extremely delighted to host the IIFA Awards 2004," Lim Neo Chian, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of the Singapore Tourism Board, said at a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday.

"The Awards are a prestigious internationally renowned event and being chosen as the host country is testimony that Singapore is an attractive and compelling destination for major international events," he added.

"Our focus has always been on creating a platform to showcase the best of Indian cinema to the world," Wiz Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, said.

"With the IIFA Awards 2004 we will continue to provide the impetus for the crossover of Indian cinema to global audiences and delight the Indian diaspora with the grandest celebration of Indian cinema."

The awards

The Hindi film industry (Bollywood) votes for nominations and winners. The IIFA Advisory Board supervises the process and PricewaterhouseCoopers audits the voting.

The board consists of Bollywood bigwigs such as Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, David Dhawan, Ramesh Sippy, J.P. Dutta, Shyam Shroff, Pehlaj Nihalini, Vinod Khanna and Yash Johar.

Awards are given in two broad categories, popular and technical. Categories under popular awards include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Performance in a Comic Role, Best Performance in a Negative Role, Best Music Direction, Best Story, Best Lyrics, Best Male Playback Singer and Best Female Playback Singer.

In the technical awards category, artistes are honoured for Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Choreography, Best Action, Best Sound Recording, Best Song Recording, Best Sound Re-recording, Best Special Effects (Visual), Best Background Score, Best Costume Design and Best Make-up.

The IIFA trophy, an artistic representation of the sun, is crafted out of brass and plated with 24-carat gold. It stands 18 inches tall.

This year's IIFA Weekend, particularly the awards ceremony, will be telecast on Sony TV.

WHAT TO SEE IN SINGAPORE

Singapore, a modern country, is a top tourist destination with many attractions. Here's a few of them:

Arab Street

The Muslim centre of Singapore is a traditional textile district, full of batiks from Indonesia, silks, sarongs and shirts. Add to this mix rosaries, flower essences, songkok hats, basketware and rattan goods, and you have a fair idea of the products haggled over in this part of the city. The grand Sultan Mosque is the biggest and liveliest mosque in Singapore, but the tiny Jama-ath Mosque is the most beautiful

Chinatown

Chinatown is Singapore's cultural heart and still provides glimpses of the old ways with its numerous temples, decorated terraces and its frantic conglomeration of merchants, shops and activity.

Little India

This modest but colourful area of wall-to-wall shops, pungent aromas and Hindi film music is a relief from the prim modernity of many parts of the city.

Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island is the city-state's most visited attraction. It has museums, aquariums, beaches, sporting facilities, walks, rides and food centres.

Colonial Singapore

The mark of Sir Stamford Raffles is indelibly stamped on central Singapore. Places of interest include Empress Place Building that houses a museum, art and antique galleries and a chic restaurant; the Padang, where flannelled cricketers once played in the searing heat; Raffles Hotel, a Singaporean institution which has become a byword for oriental luxury, etc.

Jurong

Jurong Town, west of the city centre, is a huge industrial and housing area that is the powerhouse of Singapore's economy. It is home to the Haw Par Villa (a Chinese mythological theme park), the beautifully landscaped Jurong Bird Park, Chinese Garden and the hands-on Singapore Discovery Centre.
