In Abu Dhabi, Ambassador Sudhir Vyas unfurled the flag in the presence of community members, schoolchildren and embassy staff. The ceremony was followed by the national anthem sung by a group of children from Abu Dhabi Indian School.

The ambassador also delivered the Independence Day message of Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Ambassador Vyas in his speech urged the schoolchildren to follow President Kalam's message. The president's message was focused on efforts to make India one of the most prosperous countries in the world, with poverty, illiteracy and crimes against women eradicated.

While delivering the president's speech, Ambassador Vyas, deviating from tradition, made the students take an oath on the points raised by the president.

The ceremony included a presentation of patriotic songs by school children in traditional and colourful attire. About 100 students from seven Indian schools took part.

In Dubai the Indian diaspora witnessed the flag hoisting ceremony at the mission premises. Wishing the community on the occasion the Indian Consul General Yash Sinha read out President Kalam's message.

During the flag hoisting as rose petals rained down on her face, eight-year-old Aditi Sharma savoured the experience. Asked about the significance of the day, she said: "Yes I know, my teacher has taught me. It is the Republic Day of India."

A sense of oneness pervaded among the community members as the national anthem was played out.

Says Ahmed Ali, a worker who had come to the consulate from Al Quoz labour accommodation, said: "I came with a couple of my friends. I have taken an off today. I just wanted to be here that's all."

Sounding nostalgic Sukhbir Singh, another worker, said: "I have been coming to the consulate to celebrate the day for the last three years. We Indians would never lag behind in any field. Today the world is after us as we have vast resources of human resources with knowledge and skill. Indians, wherever they are, should be proud to be an Indian."

The ceremony at the consulate was capped with an impressive hour-long cultural show that was staged by children from various Dubai-based schools.

In another function held at the Indian High School, Dubai about 6,000 students participated in a parade. The highlight of the event was the band. A minute's silence was observed for the victims of the Gujarat and Iran earthquake.

Yash Sinha was the chief, while guest of honour was the Consul General Kenya, Prem Prinja. Children with special needs from Al Noor also participated in the parade. A special squad comprising members from the of 101.6 City FM, parents and teacher also participated in the parade.

In Fujairah an evening of Hindi and Urdu poetry was staged at the Fujairah National Theatre to mark India's Republic Day.

Sheikh Hamad bin Saif Al Sharqi, Deputy Ruler of Fujairah, joined 800 people, mostly Indians and Pakistanis, for the Mehfil-e-Shea'r-o-Sukhan 2004 event, which brought together 18 Indian and Arab poets.

The first poem was recited in Arabic by Dr. Jareer Zorob, a retired Lebanese physician, which talked about the Indo-Arab relations which go back centuries and continue today.

Other 17 poems were recited in Hindi and Urdu by poets Adil Lucknavi, Ajmal Sultanpuri, Ana Dehlavi, Anwar Jalalpuri, Balchand Tripathi, Hamid Bahraichi, Hosh Baskharvi, Dr. Kaleem Qaiser, Kirti Kale, Dr. Rahat Indauri, Raju Raz, Dr. Rauf Siddiqui, Santosh Anand, Dr. Suman Dubey, Ujbak Charkharvi, Dr. Vishnu Saxena and Kiran Varma.

J Abdul Haq, manager of one of the companies that

sponsored the event along with the Indian Social Club, said: "The poems reveal a message of freedom fighting, justice, equality and enlightenment. They carry a message of friendship and love and create within them an awareness for unity."
