Diamond is basically carbon so it's a non metal. But it is an exception as it is hard and crystalline generally non metals are soft. But it is considered as a non metal as its chemical properties aren't like metals . For example when we pour dilute HCl on a metal , hydrogen gas is evolved. But mercury is a liquid metal and is considered one because it's chemical properties are that of metals
