The cost of one child ticket is $3 and the cost of one adult ticket is $5.50

Given :

The cost of buying 2 adult tickets and 3 child tickets = $20

The cost of buying one of each type = $8.50

To find :

cost of a single adult and a single child ticket

Solution :

Let A be the cost of an adult ticket

let C be the cost of a child ticket .

According to the problem, 2A+3C=20

Furthermore, A+C=8.5

In order to balance. we will multiply the second equation by 2.

Hence, we get 2A+2C=17

Then, subtracting this equation from the first equation we get

(2A+2C =17) - ( 2A+3C=20)

C=3.

When substituting this value into either of the first equations we get a value of 5.50 for A.

THEREFORE, the cost of one child ticket is $3 and the cost of one adult ticket is $5.50
