Having finished all the purchase Mother had listed I thought I would take a stroll round the market. It being Sunday, there was a lot of hustle and bustle. At one corner I chanced upon a fortune teller sitting with a number of cards and an extremely talkative parrot. I started a conversation with him.
Me(M): Good morning Sir. Can you tell me how I will fare in my upcoming board exams?
Fortune Teller(F): Good Morning young Sir. Do sit down. Point at any card you see here.
M: Well, lets take this.
F: Great. Tota, bring me that card please.
M: What does it say?
F: You will fare as you strive, no better no worse.
M: Now that is not fortune telling. It is just an adage.
F: Everything is an adage my dear. You are young and tender. I will not fool you. We fortune tellers can only infer about your future after carefully listening to your past and present. But we can never make a prophecy.
M: Then why do so many people flock to you?
F: Man is forever in a state of doubt. Men are scared of their future. With a weak mind they come to us for strength. They believe we can foresee their future and if it is not good we can change it.
M: Then why do you fool them?
F: We don't fool them. We give them strength. Why do you visit a psychiatrist or a mentor?
M: To seek solace and feel better.
F: We too are a type of mind readers. We read your mind and try to provide you relief. For example you are very worried about how you are going to do in your upcoming exam. But you should be more concerned about how well you can prepare for the exams. So I suggested that you will do as you strive.
Hearing this you will go home and study.
M: That is so true. Thanks a lot. Must be off now.
F: All the best. You have to pay me fifty rupees, my counselling charges in the language of the shrink!
