That is because we exert more pressure at a given point while standing and lesser pressure when we are lying down.

The formula of pressure is:

Pressure= Force/ Area

This means that pressure is inversely proportional to area.

When we are standing only our feet are in contact with the sand. Therefore the area of contact is less, and so pressure is more. So, we sink into the sand.

When we are lying down, a much greater area of our body is in contact with the sand. Therefore,  the pressure exerted is less, and so we don’t go deep into the sand.
