Answer: Solution X has more hydrogen ion concentration and hence is more acidic in nature.

Explanation: We are given 2 solutions having different pH values.

pH of solution X = 5

pH of solution Y = 8

Hydrogen ion concentration can be calculated by using the formula:

pH=-log[H^+]

Putting the pH value of X in above equation to find out the hydrogen ion concentration, we get

5=-log[H^+]

[H^+]_X=antilog(-5)=10^-5M

Similarly, Hydrogen ion concentration in solution Y, [H^+]_Y=10^{-8}M

A solution is always acidic when the pH is less than 7 and the solution is always basic when the pH is more than 7.

Hence, Solution X is acidic in nature and solution Y is basic in nature.
