The correct question: You have a coil and a bar magnet. You can produce an electric current by:

A. Moving the magnet but not the coil.

B. Moving the coil but not the magnet.

C. Moving either the magnet or the coil.

D. Using another DC source.

The correct answer is option  (C). Moving either the magnet or the coil.

  • An electric current (e.m.f) is produced either by moving a coil in to/out from a magnet or by moving a magnet in to/out from a coil.
  • This phenomenon is called Electromagnetic Induction.
  • Electromagnetic Induction was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1830.
  • While conducting his experiments, Faraday once noticed that on moving a permanent magnet in and out of a coil, it induced an ElectroMotive Force (e.m.f) or a Voltage, which in turn produced a current.
  • The principle of Electromagnetic induction is being used in many places, including electrical components such as inductors and transformers, and devices such as electric motors and generators.
