Test cross is used to determine the genotype of a trait with dominant phenotype.

In this test, organism having dominant phenotype is crossed with the organism having recessive phenotype.

For example, dominant yellow seeds phenotype can have two genotypes YY (homozygous) and Yy (heterozygous). When it is crossed with yy (recessive phenotype) the offspring produced will be of two types: yellow (dominant) and green (recessive).

If the all the offspring produced are of dominant types then the parent was of homozygous condition and if offspring produced contain both the dominant and recessive trait then the parents must be of heterozygous condition.
