Education is given importance over most things in most countries, especially in India. However, often studies are burdened upon the child and what is considered to be for their own benefit, does more bad to them than good. 'The Annual Conference: Problems with the Indian Education System' conducted on 23rd April focused on this aspect. It was held in the convention hall of Peter Senior Secondary School, Delhi from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Chaired by Miss. Alice Rose, renowned scholar of sociology, the session was enlightening.
The rate of student suicides in our country is alarming. She talked about various case studies from Delhi and tried to deconstruct the cases to tell us about what could be causing these young deaths. A major contribution is the pressure parents put on their children. Often, by comparing their children to others' and to show off in their friend circles, parents put undue burden on them. In some cases, they forcefully decide what the child should study after his/her 10th, without considering the wishes of the child. Coaching centres and schools take use of this parents' anxiety to make education a business.
The conference was concluded by a question and answer where students were free to ask their doubts regarding the issue. Mr. Arjun Bhatt, Head Boy served the 'Vote of Thanks'.
