Answer:

Stereotypes means to fix people into one image. Stereotype makes us fit a large number of people with many differences into one type or pattern.

For example, if a boy falls and hurt himself, his parents often try to console him by saying that, boys are strong and they don't cry. Whereas, girls are taught to be soft spoken and gentle.

3 ways to deal with stereotype are -

1) LET PEOPLE IN

Get to know them! If you are wondering about that neighbor that seems a bit out of sorts and perhaps unkempt, go say hello. Don’t assume that they are troublesome or have issues. Give them a shot! You could end up with a great friend! I did – turns out that she was depressed, she had Post-Partum Depression, and her husband was deployed. You never know – you could end up with a bestie and help them to boot!

2) STOP YOURSELF

The next time that you see someone and start thinking, “Oh, she/he is one of “those” spouses” – STOP right there (You can do it!) and ask yourself, “Why did I just have that reaction? What is it that is truly bothering me about him/her?” Try to reframe what you’re thinking about them.

3) FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE

When you see something in someone that causes you to make an automatic assumption about them, take a moment, catch yourself, and think POSITIVE. Find something about him or her that is wonderful!

Ideas that can be shared with a friend to overcome stereotypes are:

  • Find out the truth: Most of the time stereotypes have no base. They are just formed due to some regular activity. If we try to find out the truth that why any stereotype is there, only then we can get rid of them. For example, there is a stereotype that we should not broom the floor at night. It is because, in olden times, the facility of electricity was not there so people could list things while brooming in darkness.
  • Talk about the stereotypes: Ignoring anything is not the solution. If we ignore the existence of any stereotypes, how can we remove them? For example, we all know that there are several stereotypes about menstruating women. What we do is just let them prevail, we should talk about them and try to overcome some of them.
  • Convey that diversity is valid: We should understand and make others understand that being different is all right. Diversity can prevail. Being different doesn't mean that stereotypes will prevail.
