I was called in as a volunteer for flood rescue operations at ABC village last week.
We were flown in batches by helicopter to the village. The aerial view was frightening as there was water everywhere and most houses had people perched on their roof tops. We dropped food supplies, water and basic medical kits to these people. There was no place for the helicopter to land, or people to gather. Those we saw below were either on makeshift dinghies or on roof tops. Uprooted trees and some dead domestic animals floated by in the swirling waters.
We saw a small group of small children clinging to the sloping roof of an old building. The seasoned pilot asked if anyone was willing to go down and bring them up. Though it was a risky operation, I volunteered as I have had some experience, earlier. I buckled myself quickly to the harness and was lowered down gently. Fortunately, there was no wind then. I brought up four small children one by one and we quickly flew them to our base camp for treatment and nourishment.
Recently I got the lifetime opportunity to take part in a rescue operation in the recent floods which affected Vijayanagar area.
It was heartbreaking to see the kutcha houses being broken by the tremendous force of rainwater.
Roads became swimming pools, telephone and mobile lines stopped working and Vijayanagar was cut from rest of the country for 3 days.
I used all my expertise from the NCC training to rescue as many people I could.
The most endearing incident was when I rescued a small little child who was trapped inside a local bus even a few minutes of delay would have killed her.
