Dear Amit:
I hope this letter finds you in great health and spirits. I am writing to you to share with you my views about Booker T Washington; he is one of the most inspiring personalities I have ever come across. I read a novel written by him. The name of the novel is Up From Slavery. It is an autobiographical novel. I had goose bumps reading the inspiring biography.
The most inspiring part of the novel is the description of his struggle for education. He was so much passionate and determined to get education that he faced myriads of obstacles. He came to know about a school for colored people; he was on fire to go to that school. However, he did not have any means to fulfill his desire. He worked very hard and saved a few dollars. The school was in Hampton and approximately 500 miles away from Malden, his native place.
He didn’t have enough money even to travel to Hampton. But he set out to make his dream come true. He reached Hampton walking, begging for rides. Then he had no money. He worked as a labourer, slept on footpath. And when he reached the school, his appearance was very shabby. The principal was not impressed with him. In order to just discourage him, she asked him to clean a recitation-room. It was kind of his entrance test.
He cleaned the room many times, thoroughly, knowing that I would determine his fate regarding the admission to the school. The principal was very much impressed with his work and granted him admission. The most interesting thing is he was just a child at that time. Later on Booker T Washington became one of the most successful personages of America. I really get inspired when I read about him.
How is life on your side? Do share with me. Parnam to uncle and aunt.
Yours affectionately,
Raghav
