“Safar Khoobsurat hai Manzil Se bhi”- goes a song in a Bollywood flick. I stick by it to summarise the journey. But you know the sad part is, that the journey looks beautiful only if you succeed in the end. If you have been failing in previous attempts then the journey looks like an endless wait that is painful.
The start of the journey is depressing. You might be reading newspaper before but not making notes of every time our Ministers sign a treaty or if a bird has migrated to a National Park. It is worse if you have been a working professional.
I had quit my job to prepare and believe me I missed my life. I missed the salary, the routine.
After that initial Devdas-ism , you write a mock test and realise that you need to pull your socks up. Your energy levels are high. You study tirelessly. This goes on for 3–4 months. But it's the most important phase. You have overcome the worst, completed considerable syllabus and most importantly you have developed a habit of studying with focus for hours. You now fall in the category of an “ideal UPSC aspirant”- a beard and a bulging belly
Then is the boring part where you have to revise. Bah! Not again. Reading the same book again. I did not enjoy this much. The climax is reached when we solve previous years paper. I would feel happy as I scored on good range. At this stage you feel you will get nothing less than Rank 1. After all you're getting 100+ in mock Prelims.
The days when Exams are nearing are crazy. You become religious out of nowhere and your mother is so happy to see this. After the exams, you almost become the Collector and think how you will get your maid's daughter admitted to a school or get an insurance done for your driver. You're not to be blamed. That's the trick our mind plays. And in a way I would say it is good to visualise as your thoughts become positive.
The period of awaiting results is like living on the edge of a cliff. “Will I have to write another attempt? ““North East cadre bhi mil jaye toh chala jaonga “ ( Even of I get North East cadre I will join the services). No offense to any cadre here, just that people from mainland like to stay in plain areas. You're desperate at this stage.
But yes once you have the three letters ahead of your name, it is Euphoria. People around you make it better. Our folks sprinkle all the Bollywood dialogues they possibly can- “Aaj mera beta collector ban Gaya" (My son has become a Collector today).
