Answer:
I had recently set up my medical practice in a village and had a meagre salary. One night, after
work, I had my dinner from a restaurant and returned to my rented room. When I opened the door I
heard a noise. I never cared much about it because it felt like the familiar sounds of rats running
across the beam in the tiled roof. I entered the room which was not electrified and lit the kerosene
lamp on the table. I changed my dress and made my bed to go to sleep. But it was too hot and so I
went out to get catch some cool air. But it was of no use since there was no wind outside.
I came back into the room and sat on the chair beside the table. I tried reading The Materia
Medica. But, with the mirror in front of me, I was tempted to look into the mirror. I was a great
admirer of beauty and also unmarried. Immediately, I combed my hair and thought that I should
make my presence felt among women. When I was admiring my own beauty, I again heard the
sound from above. I again took a close look at myself in the mirror and decided to shave daily and
grow a thin moustache. I decided that I will marry a rich lady doctor and she should be fat. If I
made a mistake, she would not be able to run after me and beat me up.
I sat on the chair and all of a sudden he heard a thud sound. The moment I turned to see what
it was, I found a cobra had wriggled over the chair and landed on my shoulder. I sat frozen on the
chair. I felt the presence of God. The snake had curled around my arm and its hood spread out. I
knew that if I moved the snake would bite me.
Then all of a sudden the snake unwound itself and moved closer to the mirror on the table. It
might have seen its reflection in the mirror and probably admiring its beauty. I seized this
opportunity to run away from the room to my friend’s house.
