Dear diary,
I saw something today which left me very disturbed. I was on my way to my home after my music class when I saw a bit of commotion at the grocer shop, when I happened to glance over the counter.
The grocer was hitting a young boy repeatedly and on closer inspection, I saw that it was the delivery boy. He was a skinny little thing, no more than 12 years of age. He lived with the grocer as he had no parents.
He paid his keep by delivering things to customers. Thinking about it, I should say it was also a case of child labour.
But back to what happened, I saw that the boy had tears streaming down his face. My heart constricted as I noticed that his face an arms had multiple bruises forming. From what I gathered afterwards, the boy had mixed up the addresses of two deliveries. But at that moment I was shocked and stood stock still for a moment.
After that moment, my paralysis broke and I rushed towards the counter and screamed at the grocer to stop.
My shouting caused a crowd to form and a few men climbed over the counter and restrained the man. There were mentions of child abuse in the crowd, and not wanting to be caught up in any more drama, I briefly explained the situation to a police officer and slipped away after making sure the boy was in safe hands.
When I returned home, I told my parents what happened, and they took a serious view on the matter, and told me that the man may well be facing prosecution for child abuse, and the exploitation of a minor.
To be honest, I feel rather sick of the whole matter. How could anyone treat a fellow human being so cruelly? And I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't chanced a glance over the counter.
If only I hadn't! What would have happened to the poor boy?I believe that he was taken in by a child care services a few hours ago. I hope that he has a better life from now on!
