Subject: Yamuna pollution

Sir:

I am writing this letter to express my deep concern over the pollution of river Yamuna at Agra, especially near the Taj Mahal. I was really shocked to see the river, which has been converted into a large sewage and dumping drain.  A place where rivers are dirty can never have healthy people. Unfortunately, our rivers which are the lifelines of the nation have become big sewage drains. The foreign tourists must be thinking how inefficient and reckless we as a nation are!

We must ensure there is no pollution of rivers by dumping any waste such as, sewage, effluents, and other toxic substances. These toxic substances finally intrude into our bodies and food and do the maximum damage. The people and the government must ensure installation of effluents treatment plants at industrial, garbage, and sewage units. By being the proactive stewards of this rare life-supporting element can we preserve and conserve it.

Clean, pure, sparkling rivers with abundant aquatic life reflect the cleanliness of the people who live on its banks. Their cleanliness is the indicator of the health level of the people inhabiting their banks. We must preserve our rivers because our own preservation is directly linked to their conservation.

I appeal to the people and the Government of Agra to look into the serious problem and take actions to preserve the beauty and purity of Yamuna river. Kindly give my views some space in your esteemed daily.

Yours truly,

Upen Srivastva

Sir

Subject: Urban Pollution and smoke emissions

This is to draw your attention to a matter that demands the swiftest course of action, the case of industrial pollution and the consequent problems which arise out of this issue. Economic development requires the building of adequate infrastructure to aid and support the country's growth as well the necessary industrial manufacturing to contribute towards that development. But this should not come at the cost of endangering that environment.

I am a resident of Delhi. Quite recently, I had gone on a school trip to an industrial unit in the outskirts of the city and I was horrified to see the ghastly smoke emissions from the factories there. It is the air that we breathe as well and that is being constantly polluted.

This is a matter of concern and I request you to take this up in your esteemed publication so that more and more people are aware of this issue.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Yours sincerely,

Sumedha Gupta
