You have Rs. 100. Toffees cost Rs. 5 each and chocolates are 3 for Rs. 20. If you spent the entire amount, what exactly did you buy if you bought 17 items in all?

Let's buy x pencils, y pens & z notebooks where x, y & z are whole numbers.

So, x + y + z = 100 ...... (1).

& taking into account the expenditure,

5x + 50y + 500z = 10,000.

x + 10y + 100z = 2,000 .... (2).

Subtracting equation (1) from (2), we get :

9y + 99z = 1,900.

Dividing both sides by 9,

y + 11z = 1900/9 which is not a whole number. This contradicts our condition that x, y & z are whole numbers.

But as these variables denote the number of items bought, they must be whole numbers so it's IMPOSSIBLE.
