You have two straight lengths of wood. How can you cut one of them so that one of the three pieces is the average length of the other two?

According  to the question one of the piece must be longer so find the average of the pieces and cut the average length of two pieces from the longer piece

Explanation -

Let the length of the both sticks = x and x

One of them is cut at the length of y.

The other length = x - y.

y = The average of x and x - y


y =  \dfrac{x + x - y}{2}

2y = 2x - y

2y + y = 2x

3y = 2x.


 \dfrac{y}{x}  =  \dfrac{2}{3}
