mercury is a not a soft material .it is a liquid metal

ranganathansuriya1: the atom of diamond is connected to four other atoms and there is no free electron thus it is the hardest substance in the world and it is a carbon allotrophe ie non metal mercury is a liquid metal at room temperature due to its very low boiling and melting point this is the correct answer pls try to see my answer

Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at normal temperatures and pressure. What makes mercury so special? Basically, it's because mercury is bad at sharing... electrons, that is.

Most metal atoms readily share valence electrons with other atoms. The electrons in a mercury atom are bound more tightly than usual to the nucleus. In fact, the s electrons are moving so fast and close to the nucleus they exhibit relativistic effects, behaving as if they were more massive than slower-moving electrons.

Because Diamond is not a metal in anyway its just an allotrope of carbon. It does not show any physical properties or chemical properties ofmetals like electrical conductivity, malleability, ductility, reaction with acids or salts etc. Diamond is a non metal.
