On 16th of March 2018, 83 students of First Year EC Engineering along with 2 faculty members of VES University visited Alok Industries and Parle manufacturing unit in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Silvassa. We left our college at 6:45 am and reached Silvassa by 10:45 am. We travelled in a comfortable bus with students and two teachers to guide us. First, we headed to Alok Industries Alok Industries. We arrived at Alok Industries at 10:45 am. We were assembled and taken to the weaving unit of 9-A. There we had a look at the rows of weaving machines which were weaving cloth at a rate of 650 RPM. The cloth being woven was of 350 cm width.
Here compressed air blowers were circulating in the unit to blow of any excess lint and threads which may disrupt the working of the weaving unit. Most of this cloth is used for making bedsheets and pillow covers. After spending some time in the room, we were giving a thorough insight by the production manager on floor. It was interesting to know that 28,000 meters of cloth is being woven per department every day.
Alok Industries is an Indian ISO 9001:2000 certified textile manufacturing company based in Mumbai. We got to know that its main business involves weaving, knitting, processing, home textiles, ready-made garments and polyester yarns and that it exports 26% of its products to over 90 countries in the US, Europe, South America, Asia and Africa. There are 250 stores in India under the brand name H&A. Alok Industries has a 91% stake in Grabal Alok (UK) Ltd, which had 210 stores under the brand Store Twenty One . We got to see machines which are used for simple cotton cloth production.
We arrived at the Parle manufacturing plant at 12:25 pm. We were first assembled and taken to the audio-visual room. There we were shown a very informative video with a fun twist in the form of a story which informed us about the history of Parle and how it has emerged as one of India’s topmost snacks and confectionaries manufacturing company.
They also manufacture sweets and toffees. Parle now deals with many countries and their snacks are available all over the world. After the video, we got to see the actual manufacturing plant floor where Parle-G biscuits were being made.
As we entered the manufacturing floor, the fragrance of the vanilla flavoring filled our mind. At the same floor, the dough was being kneaded by big kneaders, the biscuits were molded into shape and then were being rolled through the baking oven. The oven was over 50 feet long and at the end the biscuits were cooled by going through a long conveyor belt. After cooling, they were packaged and filled into boxes by automated machines and workers respectively.
