We only feel jealous or competitive from the people, who hold similar target as us. There are 3 major targets that people chase: Money, Power & Prestige. Since they are chased by almost every single individual, a person is bound to feel jealous.
We compete and get jealous of others' successes because we are animals and we have two basic instincts: survival and reproduction. Anyone who is more successful than you has a higher probability of surviving and reproducing. And you don't want the odds to be against you, do you?
It's human nature to be competitive. It's wired into us pretty deeply, because throughout history, those who didn't think of themselves and their families first tended to be outcompeted by those who did.
But as time goes on, humans become more and more cooperative. It's in our interest to encourage others to cooperate rather than be totally selfish. Approaching life as a zero-sum game is gradually becoming a worse and worse strategy.
