STORY
Life is full of compromise and adjustments and these were the exact expectations of my parents when they decided to shift from the hustle and bustle, full of life, city of joy-Kolkata to a rural and remote village in North Bengal. We settled into a big colonial mansion probably built by the British in the village of Ichamoti. The house was an artefact of Gothic architecture with its big rooms, life-size portraits and snake-infested gardens. Owls and bats peacefully co-existed in the attic and I suppose Draculas, Vampires, Witches and Wizards held lavish parties there.
The following morning I reluctantly went to my new school- a two-storeyed mud building and tried to make friends with the handful of boys I came across. When I introduced myself and told them my address they gasped at me totally shocked and horrified. The sleuth in me immediately detected something eerie associated with the house. I started probing to find the reason for the terror. After rigorous investigation I strode upon the truth but the truth was totally contradictory to my expectations. Where I had expected the house to be a haunt of ghosts where I could enact my favourite movie ‘Bhootnath’, my schoolmates were horrified that the school had finally found a Principal. Our house was the Principal’s quarters which they called the ‘Lion’s Den’.
The school had been running without a Principal for the last two years. The students hardly attended classes. They only flocked at lunch time to avail the mid-day meal. They never bothered to study, turn up for assembly or undergo physical training. All had to change now with my announcement as unknowingly I had heralded the advent of the Principal!
