Saudi Arabia suffered the deadliest attack and blow to its oil infrastructure in recent times when drones attacked two key oil plants, destroying almost 50 percent of the nation's worldwide crude supply. Using drones, the oil processing facilities at Khurais and Abqaiq in eastern Saudi Arabia were attacked, reducing Saudi Arabia’s oil production by around 5.8 million barrels/day from around 9.9 million barrels/day, perhaps being the biggest disruption to the global oil market ever.
The rebel group named the Houthi movement from Yemen had claimed accountability, relating it to events surrounding the "Saudi Arabian interference" in the "Yemeni Civil War" and proclaiming they has used around 10 drones in the attack that was launched from Yemen, south of the facilities. Saudi Arabian officials stated that several more drones and cruise missiles were utilised for the attack and commenced from the east and north, and that they were of Iranian manufacture. Saudi Arabia and the US have claimed that Iran was behind the attack while Germany, the United Kingdom, and France together claimed Iran bears accountability for it. However, Iran has refuted any involvement. The condition has impaired the Persian Gulf crisis.
The attack resulted in huge fires at the refineries which, as stated by the Saudi Arabian Interior Ministry, were managed to be put out only after several hours. Both Khurais and Abqaiq facilities have been shut down for repairs, reducing Saudi Arabia's oil production by approximately half which represented around 5 percent of worldwide oil production, thereby causing some destabilisation of the global financial markets. Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister stated that the nation would tap into its oil reserves to retain export levels till the facilities return to full capacity, which is supposed to be by September 2019 end.
